Spring Run

Despite the cold grey weather, nine riders assembled for the Spring Run, plus Harry Wiles and Ted Robinson who turned up by car to lend some support. The machinery varied from Alan Bailey’s 1928 Ariel to Pete Brown’s 1973 Triumph Tiger 750 and included Dave Sketchley’s rare Yamaha TX500, a parallel twin with eight valves plus balance shafts from 1972.
Having toured North Warwickshire many times in the past, this year’s run was quite different. The route headed East via Cubbington and the Welsh Road, then South down the Fosse Way, before looping round through Ashorne, Wellesbourne and Hampton Lucy before turning North. The finish at the National Motorcycle Museum was reached via Norton Lindsey, Claverdon, Temple Balsall and Hampton-in-Arden.
All the riders completed the 48 mile route within an hour and three quarters, even Alan on the Ariel, so the going was clearly good. Recent floods had abated and left the roads quite clean, but strewn with gravel here and there. The Warwick Half Marathon had evidently caused the usual road closure chaos but this year’s Spring Run route stayed well clear of it and was unaffected.
Our thanks go to Martyn Roberts for the route, photos and the report, thanks also go to Alan Bailey for his photos.
